Psoriasis

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by scaling, inflammation and redness.
Scaling occurs when cells in the outer layer of the skin reproduce faster than normal and pile up on the skin's surface.

What triggers psoriasis?

While the initial trigger for development is often unknown, many people with psoriasis notice that there are times when their skin worsens, then improves.

Flareups can be triggered by:

  • Change in climate
  • Infections
  • Stress
  • Dry skin
  • Certain medicines, most notably beta-blockers, which are used to treat high blood pressure, and lithium or drugs used to treat depression.
  • Sunburn
  • Hormonal factor (eg. During pregnancy or post partum)

While  there is currently no known permanent cure for psoriasis, the best treatments will quickly produce a remission (clearance) of the symptoms. Treatment may need to be used again if symptoms reoccur.
